EPA Regulation for Lead-Based Paint

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new regulation to reduce lead paint dust, which took effect April 22, 2010. The regulation requires contractors working on homes, child-care facilities and schools built before 1978 to be trained and EPA certified in handling lead paint. This could require contractors to wear protective outfits and respirators and use thicker plastic sheeting and special vacuums for routine repairs, driving up the cost of such repairs.

Many homeowners may begin performing repairs and renovations on their own, as do-it-yourself home renovations are exempt from this rule, which could affect the cost of homeowners insurance and the number of claims.

You can visit the Professional Insurance Agents website for more information or Download a PDF copy of the EPA's Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Program Rule Handbook.
